Understanding the energy equation for EV charging

Despite all the great progress EVs have made in decarbonising fleets, there is a simple physics equation that continues to challenge even the most pioneering Fleet Manager. The fact that Energy = Power x Time. By this we mean, you cannot ‘add’ power to vehicle batteries fast enough. Therefore, it takes longer to recharge an electric vehicle than to refuel a petrol or diesel car. This might sound like an obvious statement, but it is crucial in understanding how the business needs to adapt its thinking.

Paua Tip: As it takes longer to recharge an electric vehicle, a business needs to carefully manage key time ‘killers’ inside that business case.

This includes ensuring that:

  • Drivers can swiftly find charges on the largest possible networks using a single simple access method
  • Fleet managers can check drivers are charging appropriately
  • Simple functions like the management of receipts and freezing or un-freezing a card is fully automated
  • Everything is complemented by a live dashboard

As an individual, if you have a home charge point, you can share it with another driver, and create an income stream. This will help the driver find a convenient charger near them. More electric vehicles on the road are good for everyone. However, this will need to be integrated into charging options in public and the workplace.

These are all important points for a business to address. Most of these can be addressed via a central policy, however each point needs consideration.

The opportunity cost of your drivers’ time is likely to significantly outweigh the costs of charging. Focus your attention where it matters most; saving time. Knowing that time is the biggest factor fleet managers miss means that you can outperform your peers. Well managed time ensures a strong business case which in turn will help with a smooth transition to an all-electric fleet.
