Three electric infrastructure considerations for electric vehicles; batteries & power, vehicle efficiency, and charging requirements
Batteries and energy use
Increasingly, these are getting larger in electric vehicles, but range remains a concern particularly for vans. A battery size is measured in kWh (“kilo- Watt-hours”) which indicates the amount of energy held. The charging power (or charging speed) is measured in kW (“kilo-Watts”) which is the amount of power that can be received.
Efficiency
An essential piece of data is your fleet and drivers’ efficiency. Whilst a car driver might regularly achieve 3-4 miles/kWh or more, vans drop towards 2.5 miles/kWh and below due to payloads and aerodynamics. Even more importantly, the average efficiency of each of your drivers can vary by a factor of two or more. For reference, the average London red electric bus does around 1 mile/kWh.
Charging requirements
Assessing the connectors and maximum charging speed on your vehicle choice will dictate the time taken to charge. Most modern vehicles come with both AC and DC charging. Vans tend to only offer 100kW as a top charging power (charging speed) with 50kW being the normal choice. Selecting vehicles with higher power can reduce charging times.
