TL;DR
Discover why Paua is the best EV charge card in the UK for business drivers, featuring extensive network coverage and real-time data management.
The best EV Charge Card is Paua
We may be biased but having built Paua ground up for the needs of business drivers we are hyper-focused on improving the driver experience and making it simple for the fleet manager
Key things to consider about your EV Charge Card
When selecting your EV Charge Card you should always consider the following:
- Network coverage is key. As we transition to electric vehicles your drivers will want the largest coverage possible to save time finding and charging. Paua is the UK's largest roaming network including networks such as GRIDSERVE, Instavolt, Ionity, ChargePlace Scotland and MFG. UPDATE As of February 2024 introducing; Dragon Charging and Applegreen Electric!
- Rapid charging saves time on the road. Ensure you have the highest amount of rapid chargers possible. At October 2023 Paua had 65% pf all UK rapid chargers within thr Paua EV charge card. UPDATE by February 2024 this had risen to 70% of all rapid chargers!
- Digital data. A modern tech partner is what you need to have control of your data. If your provider presents data once a month in a spreadsheet for liquid fuels they are probably not a market leader. Paua's technology ensures that all your data is visible in real time in our fleet managers dashboard.
- Renewable guaranteed. Your fleet is transitioning to enable a better outcome for the planet. Look for a renewble backed supplier. Paua is 100% renewable guaranteed.

BP pulse works only on BP pals chargers.BP pulse is not on the Paua EV charge card.
ChargePlace Scotland EV charge card
ChargePlace Scotland is a must have for Scottish EV drivers. The Scottish Government has invested significantly in electric vehicle chargepoints across the Scotland ensuring that all the small towns and villages have charges near them. For a while this network was free but increasingly it is now paid with rates set by the hosts (who are often local authorities). A £12 annual fee is required to set up your EV charge card and you pay via a direct debit on the ChargePlace Scotland website. The platform is optimised for individuals and not businesses and is therefore not optimal for businesses to use. The ChargePlace Scotland network has been on Paua since the summer of 2022.
Instavolt EV charge card
InstaVolt issues an EV charge card to fleet and business customers.The InstaVolt EV charge card only works on InstaVolt chargers but it's accompanied by a powerful digital platform for fleets much like Paua's own fleet dashboard. Feedback from customers has indicated that the Instavolt dashboard is a real breath of fresh air after reviewing incumbent oil card players dashboards. As the UK's most popular network InstaVolt is a must have network partner for any EV charge card. InstaVolt is available on the Paua EV charge card.
GRIDSERVE EV charge card
GRIDSERVE is the most recognised name on the UK's motorway network having purchased the electric highway from ecotricity in 2022. GRIDSERVE is a must have for any business or fleet driver using the motowary network.GRIDSERVE offers customers an EV charge card as well as being very efficient on credit cards (see below).GRIDSERVE is also available on the Paua EV Charge Card.
Credit cards
Credit cards are often the starting point for many small businesses. However they don't provide any form of app or dashboard support. Drivers will be forced to contact charge point networks to get valid VAT receipts and quite quickly this time and inconvenience can add up.
A credit card is a simple way to access our high proportion of DC charge points. As many AC charge points do not have credit card readers this solution does not work directly on the AC charger. Instead you can also put your credit card details into each of the apps of the AC charges. Please remember there are over 100 such apps so this quickly becomes another headache.
A credit card does not come with any form of dashboard or data integration for EV charging
A credit card will not generate a VAT receipt for your charging sessions. Not all chargepoints have access
Why have an EV Charge Card?
An EV Charge Card’s main benefit is that it enables a driver to simply use an electric vehicle charge point. The best EV charge cards on the market also link to a mobile application to enable the drivers to find the charge point and to monitor their charging during the session. And of course for business drivers it places all your EV charging receipts into one location enabling analysis of the performance of the fleet.
Save time;
- Keep your drivers on the road with one simple tool
- find the right charger with an integrated mobile app. If your EV charge card provider doesn’t have an app consider looking elsewhere.
- Access all your charging receipts, or better yet for businesses – centralise these to the fleet manager who pays the bill for the drivers
Save money;
- Enable simple accounting and tax management with one centralised bill
- Remove pre-authorisation issues with credit cards; no more 5 x £30 locked up by a charge point operator
Improved user experience
- One card, one app, and centralised payments means that you don’t need to ask your driver to download loads of apps and sign up to lots of subscriptions. Just one tool for the job.
